Animals fact

Flamingos are pink because of what they eat.

The details

Flamingo chicks are born grey or white. Their pink color comes from carotenoid pigments in the algae and brine shrimp they eat. A flamingo on a poor diet slowly fades towards white, which is why zoos add carotenoids to their food.
