Planet Earth fact

A lightning bolt is hotter than the surface of the Sun.

The details

Lightning can heat the air around it to about 30,000 °C, roughly five times hotter than the Sun’s surface. The sudden heating makes the air expand explosively, which is the sound of thunder.
