Earth isn’t a perfect sphere. It bulges at the equator.

The details

Earth’s spin flattens it slightly, so the distance through the equator is about 43 km more than from pole to pole. Because of the bulge, the peak of Chimborazo in Ecuador is the point farthest from Earth’s center.
